Animal / Ice Water Rescue
At 13:59 this afternoon, PFD volunteers were dispatched to Opperman’s Pond for a dog (Miller) that fell through the ice. Car 2371 (Chief Martineau) arrived on the scene moments later and requested firefighters to respond with Tower Ladder 5. Firefighters extended the boom on TL5 over the pond and used the bucket to safely rescue Miller. This tactic ensured that no firefighters needed to enter the icy water. Miller was uninjured and happy to be reunited with his owner.
Thornwood Fire Department was requested for their water rescue equipment to standby at the scene while firefighters rescued the dog.
Pleasantville Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded in case medical care was needed.

Tower Ladder 5 Fun Fact: TL5 has a 95′ ladder boom, which allows firefighters to reach great heights, but TL5 is also unique because the boom/bucket is capable of being extended down, allowing it to rest on the ground or reach lower angles. This was very useful at today’s dog rescue!
